Library Day in the Life - January 26, 2011

Day 3 - Wednesday, January 26th

  • Submit timesheet that was due the end of last week. My supervisor is terribly kind to put up with the fact that I often forget this.
  • Try to schedule meeting with Division of Purchasing
  • Reschedule a different meeting scheduled for February to get an update on a project we’re working on with another agency and some local librarians.
  • Provide some thoughts, via email, to State Librarian and Web Team about a preview of a service from a vendor we work with a lot.  It’s intriguing, but similar to something we created in house. Similar in meeting a need some libraries have, but the vendor’s system is much more simplistic. In this case, though, we are wondering if simplifying it more actually does a disservice to the libraries.  It’s a give-them-fish or teach-to-fish kind of discussion.
  • Try unsuccessfully to log in to an online session I wanted to listen to.  I didn’t register ahead of time, and 5 minutes before the session is too late to register. I’ll have to catch it when it’s archived.  Was looking forward to hearing one of our newer Idaho library director’s talk about her experiences with a rural library.
  • Reviewed the minutes of our Management Team’s meeting.  As all our meetings are open, even the meetings of our Management Team, the notes are shared with all staff so we can stay informed.
  • Cleaned out more email and responded to questions.  I’m realizing this is a morning habit of mine.  I had no idea I had a schedule for my mornings until doing Library Day in a Life this year.

10:00 am         Energy Kit Quarterly Report

Last year, we noticed the Georgia Public Library Service had a statewide program that provided Kill-A-Watt Energy meters to public libraries for checkout.  The energy meters measure the amount of electricity an appliance draws. People use them to determine potential energy savings if a device is powered off, unplugged, or maybe even replaced with a more energy efficient device.  With all the economic challenges individuals are having, it seemed like a good idea to introduce something through libraries that could potentially result in cost savings.  Plus, the idea fit in nicely with the energy-efficient objectives of some ICfL staff.  So, borrowing the idea, we approached the 3 largest power companies in Idaho to ask them to fund the project.  They agreed.  For just over 6 months now, the meters have been circulating from Idaho’s public libraries.  A report to the funders was due about a month ago.  They were generous enough to provide the funds, the least I can do is get a report to them about how it was a good investment for them.

  • Review usage stats already collected
  • Create report for 2nd quarter
  • Send report to partners
  • Post a little teaser about service in Twitter
  • Send request to colleague about designing some promotional materials for the service – we are in dreadful need of promotional materials for this one.

Got caught up in looking at some online updates/news.  I will never get that hour back.

1:00 pm           All sorts of things going on

  • Conversation with colleague about timing of some promotional & information releases
  • “ooh”ing and “ahh”ing over a video that Idaho Public Television created, which will be aired in their stations promoting LiLI and some services we have available online for Idaho residents.  They are very good at video production.
  • Meet w/ support staff to review meeting for Thursday: what needs to be recorded, who is transporting people to/from hotels/airport, final details for food, handouts/materials, equipment needs, etc.
  • Read a couple articles about ebooks and libraries in preparation for an upcoming discussion about it
  • Responded to questions about Rethinking Resource Sharing, an initiative I’m involved in, for an article being put together by resource sharing colleagues elsewhere in the U.S.

3:00 pm           Reading

There are plenty of stories of librarians who became librarians because the love to read.  Some people laugh with a “good luck finding time” response.  Well, today I’m reading.  Sure, I’m reading reports, but I’m definitely reading.

  • Caught up on a few articles I’d been saving to read
  • Re-reading the LiLI Database Study results in preparation for tomorrow’s LiLI meeting

4:48 pm           Calling it a Day

It’s a Day!
